Chilean court partially cancels Google’s permit for data center construction

SANTJAGO – A Chilean court today partially annulled Google’s permit for the construction of a data center in the South American country and asked the American company to take into account the effects of climate change in this case.

Google was granted approval for a $200 million data center in Santiago in early 2020, but the project has since sparked backlash from residents and local officials over possible impacts on the air quality of the capital, Reuters reported.

The court requested the company to consider the effects of climate change when assessing the water component in Santiago and, if necessary, to consider potential modifications to the cooling systems of the servers associated with the project.
